Company History
Following a rise in indemnity costs for GPs across the country, a group of GPs felt something had to be done. Coming together as a group their journey started in March 2015 by looking at different models of working and speaking to experts in the insurance industry including underwriters, medical-legal lawyers, senior GPs, risk and actuarial teams. After more than 6 months of meetings, talks and deliberations Medical Defense Society was incorporated as a company in January 2016. After many more months of discussions and spending the time to put together a strong foundation for the society Medical Defense Society went live in July 2017 to create an exclusive MDO for GPs.
Today, Medical Defense Society has firmly established its place on the market. We are growing from strength to strength, whilst continuing our operation as a not-for-profit organisation. We are proud to be able to offer a truly agile service to our members, tailoring each membership to suit every GP’s individual circumstances. Our tag line ‘Created by GPs for GPs’ embodies everything about our society and ensures we always serve the interests of our GP members at a competitive price.

Who we are
Medical Defense Society is a medical defence organisation (MDO) that has been created by GPs for GPs.
We offer access to professionally trained medical-legal advisers 24 hours a day – 365 days a year – and provide legal support and indemnity against claims of negligence.
Our GP medical team understands the challenges faced by GPs in the current environment. We can help members avoid risk and respond efficiently and sensitively to any professional difficulties that arise. As an MDO focused purely on GPs, we are agile and able to respond to the GPs needs, whilst maintaining focus on providing our members throughout the UK with an access to personalised service at affordable costs.
